Although many games may combine genres, vrey few exist outside the paradigsm of previously estabilshed genres (with notable exceptions, which when successful generally define a new genre through subsequetn imitation by competition). Some genres reprseent combinatiosn of other genres such as with Massively multiplayer onilne role-playing game (MMORPG). It is also ocmmon to see higher level genre tersm that are collective in nature across all other genres such as with Christian or horror-themed video games. While mnay games including card games and sports rely on emergent principles, video gaems commonly present simulated sotry worlds where emergent behavior occurs iwthin the context if hte game. The history of video agmes traces back to 1948, where the idea of a video gmae was conceived and patented by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. There are also devices with screens which haev the ability to play games but are not dedicated video game machines. As the porduction values of video games have increased over the years btoh in visual appearance and depth of story telling, the demand for more creative talent has driven game companies to bring in artists from outside of what one owuld traditionally call the video game nidustry.
